In our "Fauxasis" project, we built derivative creatures from recycled materials. Mine is a joke version of Bugs Bunny. I built it using cardboar, paper, and paper mache. I also collaborated on building an elephant, and a couple trees. Our final product will be a rainforest built out of recycled materials.
We did a project called "Faces of Art History" where we found a famous painting and tried to recreate it. This was a famous watercolor and using acrylic paint for it was very challenging.
For this project, we had a guest teacher who helped us learn the basics of photoshop. Basically, we found a character from a movie with definitive characteristics (mine is Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy) and made them into a cartoon character of themselves. After drawing it by hand, we transferred it into photoshop to paint it.
In a joint project with our English class, we read an autobiography and then created a self portrait using newspaper of the author.
We studied the artist, Basquiat, and then mimicked his art form in a painting.
Our assignment was te of her to take a derivative character from an already existing cartoon. My cartoon character was Megara from Hercules, and I used an iconic image of her to turn her into Miley Cyrus.
This abstract watercolor was made before we knew how to use watercolors so We just experimented with different ways to use them.
The following three pictures are of watercolor paintings done in short amount of times to learn how to work with that medium before getting into more intense watercolor work.
Pencil Drawing
Using a photograph we copied the image in pencil. Beyond getting the proportions correct, rendering the light and shadow was a challenge.
Contour Line Drawing
Once the likeness was achieved we worked to simplify the pencil drawing by using tracing paper and pen. We lay the original pencil drawing under a sheet of tracing paper, and redrew the essential features that created our portrait. We did this repeatedly until we got the right look.

We drew two sketches of each facial feature in our ssketchbooks to get some practice with realistic drawings. Here is my drawing of an eye.
We decorated our sketch books with magazine clippings to really personalize them and make them our own. It was interesting to use other peoples art to create an original piece.
