A rehearsal process is a swordfight. Each new character is an opponent and becoming that character was as exhilarating to me as winning a fencing match. As reigning champion, the fight to retain my title was threatened when I was given the opportunity to play Fanny Brice. Fortunately, wielding a sword was my forte: somehow, I had always felt more comfortable onstage than off. Transforming into someone else was natural for me. Easy. But in Funny Girl, I always felt like I was a step behind. Like everyone else in the cast had gotten an updated version of the script and I hadn’t been cc’d on the email. In fact, I had started to wonder why the director had chosen to cast me in the part. I get it, I’m inherently similar to her... but can I pull it off? Fanny Brice. To me the character seemed mentally unstable. In a two hour show, she cried more than I had in the past two years, and she switched quickly from utter depression to cracking a joke--sometimes even in the middle of a line.
